Values-Based Investing

Investing with Integrity

Your beliefs are personal. Your portfolio should be too.

What Integrity means, and where ESG falls short

Investing with Integrity means aligning your money with your values, without outsourcing your conscience to a label. ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is often marketed as a simple shortcut. In practice, it is messy. ESG standards vary, ratings disagree, and the same company can look "responsible" in one framework and questionable in another. (Source: OECD, 2025)

Greenwashing is a real concern. Many ESG metrics track policies and disclosures more than real-world outcomes, which can reward box-checking. (Source: OECD, 2025) Canadian regulators have called out the risk of greenwashing and pushed for clearer ESG fund disclosure. (Source: CSA, 2024) Even data providers have tightened rules: In 2022, Morningstar removed over 1,200 funds from a European sustainable list after a review. (Source: Morningstar, 2022)

Integrity is not about perfection. It is about intentional choices, transparency, and building a strategy you can stick with.

My values-first philosophy

I do not believe in pre-packaged "ESG-friendly" portfolios. I believe in clarity, moral congruence, and honest tradeoffs. Your definition of responsibility is personal. My job is to help you articulate it, implement it, and revisit it as your life changes.

  • No moral posturing, no buzzwords
  • Clear explanations of what you own and why
  • A portfolio built to pursue your goals and respect your principles
My Approach

How I approach ESG and values-based investing

I focus on four pillars that keep the process practical and grounded.

1

Clarity over conformity

We define your values first, then translate them into real portfolio decisions. No box-checking.

2

Moral congruence

When investments conflict with values, people feel it. The goal is alignment you can live with.

3

Impact with realism

Public markets have limits. We use engagement and thoughtful tilts where they make sense, and we stay honest about what is indirect.

4

Tax-efficient philanthropy in Canada

If giving is part of your plan, donating publicly traded securities can be tax-efficient in Canada because capital gains may be eliminated on eligible gifts, while still generating a donation receipt. Where tax considerations matter, I coordinate with your accountant to align the investment approach and your giving goals. (Source: CRA, 2024)

Performance, risk, and tradeoffs, with dates that matter

A Morningstar research report published in 2023 found no performance penalty for ESG funds on average over the past 3, 5, and 10 years, and slightly higher average returns versus traditional peers in those periods. (Source: Morningstar, 2023)

Short-term gaps can happen. In 2022, energy stocks surged and many ESG approaches underweighted fossil fuels, which contributed to relative underperformance for some ESG funds that year. (Source: Morningstar, 2023)

What this means for you

We design for long-term goals, diversify, and treat values as constraints we manage thoughtfully, not as marketing.

Why it matters

Many Canadians want their investments to reflect their values. A 2023 poll reported that 65 percent of Canadians say values alignment matters, and 75 percent believe you can do good without sacrificing returns. (Source: BMO InvestorLine, 2023)

Integrity is not about perfection. It is about intentional choices, transparency, and building a strategy you can stick with.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does ESG investing mean lower returns?

Not necessarily. A 2023 Morningstar research report found no performance penalty for ESG funds on average over the past 3, 5, and 10 years. However, short-term differences can occur; for example, in 2022, some ESG funds underperformed due to underweighting fossil fuels during an energy rally. (Source: Morningstar, 2023)

Why do ESG ratings disagree?

ESG ratings differ because there is no universal standard. Each ratings provider uses different metrics, weightings, and methodologies. The same company can appear responsible in one framework and questionable in another. (Source: OECD, 2025)

What is greenwashing in investing?

Greenwashing refers to misleading claims about the environmental or ethical credentials of investment products. Canadian regulators have issued guidance warning about funds that overstate their sustainability practices. (Source: CSA, 2024)

If I want impact, is investing enough?

Public market investing has limits when it comes to direct impact. If making a tangible difference matters to you, strategic and tax-efficient giving can be a powerful complement. Donating publicly traded securities in Canada can eliminate capital gains while generating a donation receipt. (Source: CRA, 2024)

Can ESG reduce risk?

Some research suggests that companies with strong governance and risk management practices may be better positioned for long-term stability. However, ESG factors are one of many considerations and do not guarantee reduced risk. (Source: MSCI, 2024)

How do we define my values in practice?

We start with a conversation about what matters to you, then translate those priorities into practical portfolio decisions. That could mean taking satellite positions in companies you believe in, building engagement strategies, or adjusting over time as your values evolve.
